Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s powerful words still resonate today. Throughout his life he spoke in numerous places, one of those being in one of our own neighborhoods. On July 28, 1967 Dr. King gave a speech across the street from St. Mark’s Church in Glenville, as pictured in the image. During that speech he encouraged people to vote and reminded them of their worth. Dr. King frequented Cleveland, speaking to Cleveland’s Black community, advocating for peaceful resistance against discrimination. He was also very vocal in supporting worker’s rights and fair housing in Cleveland. Dr. King was invited to Cleveland after the July 1966 Hough riots by Black ministers who were concerned for their community. During his visits to Cleveland he would speak at schools and rallies, one of those schools being Glenville High School. He also preached sermons in local churches. Dr. King’s legacy lives on, and part of that history is right in our own neighborhood!
