MyCom is a network of caring adults that connect Greater Cleveland's youth to quality programs in their neighborhoods and beyond so that they can develop 21st century skills and maximize their talents to connect, navigate and be productive. By inspiring and preparing young people in Greater Cleveland to reach their potential and contribute to their community, MyCom is a key success factor in their lives.
Glenville, a MyCom neighborhood, has a long history of activism and working together as residents, schools, and faith-based organizations. One of its strong values is that the young people who live in Glenville are the “experts” and their goal is to make sure the youth voice is heard.
Famicos provides youth with many opportunities to strengthen their literacy and increase their knowledge. These programs include: Hough Reads, Raise the Bar, 12 Literary Arts, and Circle Scholars.
Famicos has partnered with Youth Opportunities Unlimited to provide youth in Glenville, Hough, and St. Clair-Superior with career readiness training, and summer employment.
The Famicos Youth Landscaping Program is a seasonal youth employment program that provides vocational training, support, recreation, exercise, and community service while also promoting financial skills, leadership development, and entrepreneurship.
Youth employees ages 14-19 work in teams over seven weeks learning basic landscaping skills that they then provide free of charge for seniors in their neighborhoods. The youth are compensated for their work and are mentored by adult supervisors. At the end of the summer students are provided with a certificate of achievement, mentoring opportunities, and an updated resume to use for continued employment opportunities.
This program has given seniors that are shut in and disabled access to free landscaping services throughout the summer and continued services into the fall, including leaf removal. An important goal of this program has been to foster positive youth and senior relationships throughout our neighborhoods.
